Things may not be all that great on the flexible displays front, and WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) mobile displays by LG may be breathing down its neck, but Samsung isn't trailing behind on the mobile smartphone advancement front. It's only growing in a completely different direction, 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels).
Samsung set itself the ambitious, though not impossible, goal of bringing to market the first smartphones with Ultra HD displays within the 2014-15 time frame. Plans to that effect are already showing up on company roadmap. Like LG, Samsung Electronics has a vast amount of resources deployed with displays, and so the company's 4K smartphone plans are far from laughable.
To display those many pixels, a smartphone needs a vast amount of computational power, and more importantly, oodles of memory. A switch to the 64-bit address-space would be inevitable, and that's where the company's plans to build SoCs with 64-bit ARM cores step in. The company's next-generation Exynos SoC is rumored to pack a big.LITTLE combination of high-performance and low-power cores, much like its current Exynos 5 Octa series.
With SK Hynix announcing the first 6-gigabyte LPDDR3 chip, the pressure is on Samsung, the bigger Korean DRAM maker, to come up with something equal or better.
