Taiwan-based multi-chip package (MCP) memory solution providers Eon Silicon Solution and Elite Semiconductor Memory Technology (ESMT) have seen their shipments of MCP products continue growing due to strong demand from the smartphone segment, according to industry sources.
The current supply of NOR flash-based MCP products for smartphone applications is extremely tight because major NOR flash vendors, including Samsung Electronics, Macronix International Company (MXIC) and Winbond Electronics, are unable, or reluctant, to ramp up MCP products, the sources indicated.
Samsung Electronics is currently focusing on the production of NAND as well as high-density NOR flash memory products, while MXIC and Winbond Electronics are concentrating on sales of discrete NOR flash chips and other niche memory products, explained the sources.
Due to limited supply from the major vendors, Eon and ESMT both have received more windfall orders for NOR flash MCP products, commented the sources, adding that Eon alone is expected to ship three million MCP solutions in April. |
