MediaTek reportedly plans to launch 6-8 application processors for tablets in 2014 compared to four CPUs released in 2013, according to industry sources.
The new CPUs launched in 2014 are expected to come in 8-core models for high-end tablets, quad-core CPUs for mid-range tablet applications and dual-core CPUs of entry-level models, the sources.
The 8-core CPUs are being developed for high-end large-size tablets that will compete with notebook models, while the quad- and dual-core tablet CPUs are likely to be incorporated into wireless chips in order to compete with large-size smartphones, the sources added.
Including the two tablet CPUs, the MT8283 and MT8389 launched in the second half of 2013, MediaTek is expected to ship over 20 million tablet CPUs in the year.
MediaTek is likely to more than double its tablet CPU shipments in 2014, given global shipments of Android-based tablets are expected to grow to 180-200 million units in next year compared to 130 million units shipped in 2013, estimated the sources.
