Toshiba has announced that it will end production of LCD TVs at Dalian Toshiba Television (DLTV) and close down the China plant by end of December 2013.
Production of TVs manufactured at DLTV for the Japan market will be outsourced, and Toshiba will continue to supply TVs to the China market through a partnership with a local manufacturer, the company said.
The decision was made as part of Toshiba's measures to reform its visual products business and have the unit return to profits through a facility-light strategy, the company noted. By optimizing a balance between in-house production and production by its ODM partners, Toshiba is looking to cut fixed costs and enhance operational efficiency.
Earlier in 2013, Toshiba transferred the ownership of its TV manufacturing plant in Poland to Compal Electronics.
Toshiba said the company expects its visual products business to return to profitability in the second half of the current fiscal year ending March 2014. |
