The India smartphone market jumped by 229% on year in the third quarter of 2013, with vendors shipping a total of 12.8 million smartphones compared to only 3.8 million units during the same period of 2012, according to IDC.
On a sequential basis, third-quarter shipments represent an almost 28% increase from the units shipped in the second quarter of 2013, said IDC.
Models with screen sizes of five to 6.99-inch continued to show sustained growth in the third quarter of 2013, IDC indicated. The segment accounted for about 23% of the overall smartphones shipped in India, the research firm said.
The overall shipments of mobile phones consisting of feature phones and smartphones in India registered growth of 12% on year and 7% on quarter in the third quarter of 2013, IDC disclosed. Feature phones accounted for 81% of the total phones shipped in the quarter, compared to 84% in the second quarter and 93% in third-quarter 2012, IDC said.
"The growth in the smartphone market continues to drive the overall growth numbers for the phone market - given that there's still a huge potential for smartphone penetration in India, this trend is expected to continue in the coming quarters," said Manasi Yadav, senior market analyst with IDC India.
Kiran Kumar, research manager with IDC India, commented, "The change agents for this rapid shift of consumer preference towards smartphones have been the narrowing price gap between feature phones and smartphones. The smartphone market is expected to maintain these elevated levels of growth in the near future."
The India smartphone market in the third quarter of 2013 was led by Samsung Electronics with a 32.9% share, followed by Micromax with a 17.1% share, Karbonn with 11.2%, Nokia 5% and Lava 4.7%, according to IDC. |
