ALi Corporation, a set-top box (STB) system-on-chip (SoC) solution provider, has announced that it has joined forces with LG Electronics and Shenzhen Jiuzhou to begin mass production of a new ATSC STB solution. The collaborated solution for the Mexican market will feature ALi's STB SoC, M3812, with LGE's ATSC demodulator and RF tuner, and the STB will be manufactured by Shenzhen Jiuzhou.
ATSC, mostly adopted in the Americas, is a set of standards for digital television transmission over terrestrial networks. ATSC has replaced the analog NTSC in the United States and Canada, with the digital rollover to be completed by 2015 in Mexico. The Mexican authority is pressing forward with the digitalization process, with Tijuana in northern Mexico being the first city in Latin America to complete the switchover from analog to digital TV broadcasting just as recently as in May 2013. The digital television penetration in Mexico is currently around 22% of the total 27 million TV households, making Mexico the next focus for explosive growth of digital TV broadcasting, ALi said.
