Intel's aggressive coordination with its brand vendor partners recently over product pricing and R&D supports has earned the CPU giant mobile processor orders from these vendors, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Most of these vendors originally cooperated with MediaTek and have given up their joint developments with the chipmaker to turn to place orders with Intel, the sources noted.
In addition to R&D supports, Intel has also been rumored of giving preferential pricing to its partners and even supplying its chips for free to earn its partners' hearts, the sources said. However, Intel Taiwan refuted the rumors and said that the company's CPU prices are available publicly and the company will never supply its processors for free.
The sources pointed out that Intel has still not been able to achieve some results in the mobile device market so far and therefore is trying to achieve some performance in 2014 by investing more resources in marketing.
Intel has previously announced it would ship 40 million tablet processors in 2014, but internally, it has set a target of 60 million units for the year, a surge from 6-7 million in 2013 and with cash investments and R&D supports, the sources believe that Intel is trying to significantly expand its presence in the tablet industry through a giant shipment jump. |
