Telecom carrier Taiwan Mobile (TWM) plans to procure 2.3 million 4G-supporting handsets and tablets in total in 2014, growing 15% on year, according to company president Cliff Lai.
The devices will either support 1800MHz or 700MHz, with the former spectrum likely to account for as many as 1.5 million units, Lai said.
International vendors are expected to launch mobile terminal devices supporting 700MHz APT (Asia-Pacific Telecommunity) frequency units in first-quarter 2014, Lai said, adding in second-quarter 2014, Samsung Electronics, HTC and Sony Mobile Communications will have launched many 700MHz-supporting smartphone models. TWM may offer 4G smartphones for NT$5,000-10,000 (US$167-333) in 2014, Lai indicated.
TWM has acquired a 700MHz frequency band unit, coded A4, and an 1800MHz one ,C1, for 4G operation, while fellow company Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) has obtained two 1800MHz frequency band units, C3 and C4.
