Flat panel makers in Taiwan can expect limited purchases from TV vendors in China during 2014 as China panel makers continue to bump up their production capacity, according to Taiwan External Trade Development Council chairman, Wang Chih-kang.
Wang's words follow recent discussions with China Video Industry Association deputy director Bai Weimin who in brief told Wang that panel purchases from Taiwan makers in 2014 may be limited.
China panel makers such as China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) are reportedly bumping up production capacity. The company aims to increase its proportion of large-size TV panel shipments to around 16% in 2016 while 32-inch panels are expected to make up around 70%. CSOT is also expected to increase production of Ultra HD TV panels in 2014.
The panels are expected to meet demand from China's TV vendors such as TCL, which expect to see steady shipments in the China market during 2014 as well as in emerging markets. TVs sized 32-inch are expected to be the mainstream in China during 2014 but larger-size units in addition to high-end units are expected to make up an increasingly larger proportion.
Market observers noted that China-based makers will focus on expanding production of 32-inch LCD TV panels, which Taiwan makers currently have less interest in due to increased market demand for larger-sizes and higher-end panels.
