MediaTek reportedly is looking for production partners in Taiwan and China for the supply of fingerprint sensors or modules priced below US$10 per unit, according to industry sources.
A number of smartphone brands in China are eager to incorporate fingerprint sensors into their forthcoming high-end models, therefore pushing MediaTek to update its smartphone platforms to enable fingerprint recognition, said the sources.
Since unit prices of fingerprint sensors available from AuthenTec, Validity Sensors, and FingerPrint Cards (FPC) are mostly higher than US$10 currently, MediaTek is looking to tap supply sources in Taiwan or China, indicated the sources.
MediaTek reportedly has been in talks with Taiwan-based EgisTec for possible cooperation, but plans have not been finalized, revealed the sources.
