While Samsung Electronics are expected to roll out an array of new smartphones and tablets for high-end as well as entry-level segments in 2014, the vendor is quite unlikely to release orders to Taiwan-based ODMs, according to sources at Taiwan's ODMs.
The sources believe that Samsung will exert more efforts to develop entry-level mobile devices in 2014 in view that the rising purchasing power in emerging markets will serve as a driving force to stir up demand for mobile devices in the end market in 2014.
In addition to entry-level smartphones, Samsung is also expected to release more entry-level tablets, including the Galaxy Tab Lite family products, in the year.
Since Samsung has established complete supply chains around the world, especially in China where it is working with nearly 250 factories, it is unlikely for the Korea vendor to release entry-level ODM smartphone or tablet orders to Taiwan's ODMs, added the sources.
Based on company data released in June 2013, Samsung boasts a total of 13 large-scale production bases and seven research labs in China, with total employees of 45,600 or 20% its global workforce.
Samsung is also currently building a large-scale handset production base in Yen Binh Industrial Zone in Vietnam. Production of handsets at the first-phase construction of the plant is slated for February 2014, and the plant will have a production capacity of 120 million handsets a year by 2015, the sources revealed.
Over 80% of Samsung's handset production is likely to switch to Vietnam after 2015, the sources estimated.
