Shipments of MediaTek's smartphone solutions are expected to grow at a robust pace in 2014, buoyed by efforts by China-based smartphone vendors to expand overseas sales, and growing global demand for entry-level and mid-range smartphones, according to industry sources.
China-based brand and white-box handset vendors have begun pushing smartphone sales to other emerging markets, a move which will benefit MediaTek as the Taiwan-based IC provider currently accounts for 60-70% of China's smartphone solution market, said industry sources.
Meanwhile, global demand for entry-level and mid-range smartphones is expected to hike by over 25% in 2014, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has estimated.
It is believed that MediaTek has already landed over 50% of new solution orders for the first quarter of 2014 from first- and second-tier China-based handset makers, said the sources.
MediaTek shipped 220 million smartphone solutions in 2013, doubling the 110 million units shipped in 2012, according to company internal data.
Shipments of MediaTek's smartphone solutions are likely to grow 25% or higher in 2014, the sources estimated.
