MediaTek is expected to ship 65 million chipset solutions for smartphones in the first quarter of 2014, accounting for 25-30% of the global smartphone solution market in the quarter, according to an industry estimate.

While solution shipments from Qualcomm to clients including Apple and Samsung Electronics appear to have slowed down recently affected by slow seasonal sales of high-end smartphones, MediaTek has managed to maintain shipment momentum of its 8-core solutions in the first quarter, said industry sources.

MediaTek shipped over 220 million smartphone solutions in 2013, accounting for about 20% of the global smartphone solution market, based on global smartphone shipments of over one billion units in the year, the sources noted.

With Qualcomm and other solution vendors now waiting for clients to release new models for the second quarter, MediaTek will further ramp up its share in the first quarter, the sources commented.
