The BlackBerry-Foxconn tie-up is expected to launch their first jointly developed BlackBerry 10-based smartphone, the Jakarta, in Indonesia in April, according to industry sources.
BlackBerry is counting on the launch of the Jakarta to recapture its market share lost to Android models, said the sources, noting that BlackBerry currently accounts for 14% of Indonesia's handset market compared to 40% previously.
Samsung Electronics has replaced BlackBerry as the top handset vendor in Indonesia, while local brands including Cross and Mito have also emerged as major forces in the market, the sources indicated.
In addition to handling production, Foxconn will also be involved in marketing the Jakarta – a business model that will help BlackBerry control overall costs, the sources commented.
The Jakarta is expected to target the US$100-150 segment since prices of mainstream smartphone models available in Indonesia are currently set below US$200, while entry-level models are priced below US$100, noted the sources.
The BlackBerry-Foxconn team is also expected to launch a Jakarta variant with a QWERTY keyboard, said the sources. |
