Canonical today officially announced their very first Ubuntu phone partners. The very first of its kind will be arriving from both Meizu and BQ Readers. Canonical says that its next big challenge is to get the global Smartphone leaders on-board the Ubuntu train, and also to poach developers to make/port apps and games for Ubuntu mobile. Two more big OEMs should join the list, but not before 2015, according to Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth.
A failed Indiegogo campaign did slow down Canonical's plans to produce their very own Ubuntu phone, but the developers of the most popular Linux distro aren't going to step down their efforts because of one setback. Good for them, and us as well. Ubuntu mobile shows ample promise to provide us with a zippy yet powerful experience on mid-range hardware (Nexus 4 level). |
