Acer and Asustek Computer have increased tablet orders released to China-based ODMs, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.
Acer had 70% of its tablets produced by Taiwan-based ODMs and 30% by China-based ODMs in 2013, but is likely to increase the proportion to China-based ODMs to 70% in 2014, the sources said.
Along with increasing ODM orders, Taiwan-based vendors have also placed more orders with China-based makers of components including connectors and cable assemblies because their quotes are significantly lower than those of Taiwan-based makers, the sources indicated. In addition, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Dell have released increased orders to China-based supply chain makers, implying that Taiwan-based makers are losing orders from HP and Dell, the sources said.
However, some Taiwan-based component makers have an advantage in technology and thereby can secure orders, such makers include Simplo Technology and Dynapack International Technology for battery packs, Chaun-Choung Technology, TaiSol Electronics and Asia Vital Components for thermal pipes, Shin Zu Shing, Jarllytec and Sinher Technology for hinges used in slim notebooks, and Catcher Technology and Ju Teng International Holdings for metal-alloy and carbon-fiber chassis.
