Taiwan-based memory chipmakers should optimize the advantage of their design capabilities and Taiwan's manufacturing capacity to develop customized memory chips for clients, according to Nicky Lu, chairman of SDRAM maker Etron Technology.
After the acquisition of Elpida Memory, Micron Technology has stepped up its cooperation with Taiwan-based Nanya Technology and Inotera Memories, enabling the two firms to further strengthen their developments in the niche memory market, Lu noted.
More and more downstream clients will look for customized SoC solutions, and they will prefer to cooperate with Taiwan-based IC houses to develop chips that will differentiate from current major memory suppliers, Lu added.
The HMC (Hybrid Memory Cube) technology from Micron and the Wide I/O technology from Samsung Electronics are the two latest new technologies developed by memory solution makers in house, indicated Lu, adding that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) reportedly has stepped into the development of its own Wide I/O technology.
SiP packaging will become an important technology of the semiconductor industry as pointed out by TSMC chairman Morris Chang.
Optimizing SiP packaging, the heterogeneous chip integration process will also emerge as the mainstream semiconductor technology in the future, said Lu, adding that Etron is currently focusing on KGD (known good die) memory products before stepping into the TSV (through-silicon via) technology. |
