Korea-based TV vendors are increasingly showing interest in the Ultra HD TV segment while shifting focus away from OLED TVs, according to market observers.
LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics are now focused on curved and various other high-end Ultra HD TVs in 2014 instead of OLED TVs as previously expected by the companies.
OLED TV panel costs remain high due to material costs, said the observers, adding that Ultra HD TVs currently have lower costs and higher yield advantages than originally expected, prompting LG and Samsung to shift their focus.
Both LG Display and Samsung Display are continuing to develop OLED TV panel technology, however, the observers expect the two companies to only see slight breakthroughs in 2016-2017.
Meanwhile, the two Korea-based panel makers are also reportedly working on lower-priced Ultra HD TV panel solutions in addition to new sizes to compete against Taiwan's panel makers.
The observers also said they expect to see production of PDP and CRT TVs end in 2015. |
