MediaTek expects its consolidated revenues to grow 12-20% sequentially to NT$51.5-55.2 billion (US$1.71-1.83 billion) in the second quarter of 2014, according to company president Hsieh Ching-chiang.
Gross margin for the second quarter is expected to reach 47.5%-49.5% compared to 48.3% posted in the previous quarter, Hsieh said at the company's recent online investors conference.
Buoyed by continual demand for smartphones in emerging markets, MediaTek's shipments of smartphone solutions are likely to top 80-90 million units in the second quarter compared to 75-80 million shipped a quarter earlier, Hsieh revealed.
Shipments of 8-core smartphone solutions were stronger than expected in the first quarter, accounting for over 10% of the company's total smartphone solution shipments, Hsieh noted, adding that sales of 8-core solutions will be better than those shipped in the previous quarter.
MediaTek will begin volume production of its first 8-core LTE SoC, the MT6595, in the third quarter of 2014, and its 64-bit quad- and 8-core LTE chips a quarter later, Hsieh revealed.
