MediaTek reportedly has been adding more 28nm chip orders at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) due to production defects found in 28nm chips fabricated by Globalfoundries for the Taiwan vendor's smartphone solutions, according to industry sources.
Although Globalfoundries has made great efforts to address the issue, and the defects should not affect MediaTek's operations significantly, MediaTek has decided to place additional 28nm orders with TSMC and UMC, the sources claimed.
However, due to tight production of the 28nm production lines at TSMC, MediaTek may not be able to significantly increase its orders at TSMC, the sources noted.
UMC has seen its 28nm process orders increase in meaningful volume recently thanks to orders from MediaTek, said the sources. However, UMC, MediaTek, and TSMC all had no comments on the reports.
