Asustek Computer has announced net profits of NT$4.36 billion (US$144.69 million) for the first quarter, down 23% on quarter and 28% on year with EPS reaching NT$5.87. Asustek shipped 4.9 million notebooks in the first quarter.
  Asustek's first-quarter consolidated revenues were NT$100.27 billion, down 16% sequentially and 5% on year, while gross margins were 13.2%, up 0.6pp sequentially.
  In addition to notebooks, Asustek shipped 2.1 million tablets, 5.2 million motherboards, and 200,000 handsets. For the second quarter, the company expects to ship 4.6 million notebooks, 2.8 million tablets, 5.2 million motherboards and 1.5 million handsets due to the releases of its ZenFone series.
  Asustek is expected to ship about 500,000 ZenFone smartphones in May and with demand from China, Taiwan and countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, gradually picking up, shipments are expected to reach one million units in June, creating a chance of shipping 10 million handsets in 2014.
