Some handset vendors are likely to roll out water-proof smartphones targeting the sub-US$300 segment in 2015, according to sources at Taiwan's handset component supply chain.
Sony Mobile Communications, which has pioneered the production of water-proof smartphones, reportedly has been seeking cooperation with component suppliers, aiming to push sales of water-proof models to the entry-level to mid-range sector, said the sources.
Sony Mobile's mid-range water-proof models are currently available for US$400-500, the sources indicated.
Other vendors, which have also launched water-proof smartphones including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, HTC, Motorola Mobility, Lenovo and K-Touch, are likely to expand their water-proof portfolios due to increasing popularity of such models, added the sources.
Taiwan-based handset ODMs said that they are ready to produce entry-level and mid-range water-proof smartphones for clients since these models will help ramp up sales for themselves and their clients as well.
