Most Taiwan-based handset ODMs have built up capacities for producing wearable devices, but have yet to see any orders coming from major vendors, according to industry sources.
The ODMs, including Compal Communications, FIH Mobile, Inventec Appliances and Arima Communications, have been expecting to land such orders since the start of 2014, said the sources.
The expectations are based on the fact that Sony Mobile, Samsung Electronics and Huawei have already launched smartwatches or smart bracelets, while other vendors including LG Electronics and Motorola Mobility also plan to release wearable devices in 2014, noted the sources.
The sources also pointed out that orders for wearable devices are still hard to come by at this time because handset vendors are still groping for market demand and therefore have been focusing their R&D efforts in house or contracting the production to other small-scale wearable device-design companies.
However, orders for wearable devices are expected to pick up substantially in the second half of 2014 when Google releases its Android Wear platform for the wearable devices, commented the sources.
