Sony is reportedly considering to expand its data centers to strengthen its cloud computing services, as well as explore and develop applications for big data business opportunities, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. Sony is said to be outsourcing related orders to Taiwan-based ODMs.
Taiwan-based server ODMs such as Quanta Computer and Wistron declined to comment on the report.
Advantages of Taiwan ODMs in pricing and supply time are key factors that has prompted Sony to choose Taiwan ODMs as its supplier for servers.
Prior to Sony, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Samsung, have also chosen Taiwan ODMs for their server supply.
Since Sony is set to ship 50 million smartphones in 2014, up from 39.1 million units from 2013, and is seeing good sales for its PlayStation 4 recently, expanding its data centers to satisfy new demand has become important for the Japan-based vendor. |
