With China-based Xiaomi set to ship 50-60 million smartphones in 2014 and 100 million units in 2015, Wistron and Pegatron Technology are both aggressively trying to land related orders, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Xiaomi claimed that the company shipped 11 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2014, up 150% from a year ago.
Currently, Xiaomi's smartphones are supplied by Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Inventec, while Wistron is the manufacturer of Xiaomi's LCD TVs, the sources noted.
The sources pointed out that Wistron's existing partnership with Xiaomi and the ODM's touch panel capacity in Taizhou, China, should give the maker a better chance of landing new orders. Wistron is now trying to negotiate touch panel orders first then will ask for smartphone assembly orders later.
However, Wistron declined to comment on its clients.
In addition to Wistron, Compal Electronics has also been aggressively investing in touch panel production. Compal's joint venture with LG Display became fully owned by Compal after the company increased its investment at the end of the first quarter. |
