4G LTE smartphones will take up 10% of all smartphones sold in the Taiwan market during the first half of 2014, and as Chunghwa Telecom kicked off 4G commercial operation in late May and Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone Telecommunications will do so in June or July, the proportion is expected to rise to 50% at the end of 2014, according to Mobile Communications general manager Andy Tu for Samsung Electronics Taiwan.
Due to fast increasing demand for entry-level and mid-range smartphones in the Taiwan market, sales of high-end models so far in 2014 have shrunk 38% on year, Tu said. However, sales of high-end smartphones are expected to rebound in the third quarter with the start of 4G commercial operations, Tu said.
In line with the availability of 4G services, 4G-enabled models account for 90% of mobile devices launched by Samsung in the Taiwan market, and most 4G models support 700MHz, 900MHz and 1800MHz frequency bands, Tu indicated. The 4G models are mid-range and high-end ones with contract-free retail prices above NT$5,000 (US$166), Tu noted.
