MediaTek is likely to take up the baseband business unit of Broadcom after the US-based chipmaker announced recently that it plans to sell or wind down the business for cost savings, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
The speculated acquisition will help MediaTek strengthen its 4G LTE technology and also take over Broadcom's existing LTE clients, including Samsung Electronics, the paper said.
MediaTek president Hsieh Ching-chiang declined to comment on market reports although he said earlier that MediaTek will continue to expand its business through acquisitions, the paper added.
