MediaTek's shipments of 3G smartphone solutions to China have not been affected by the moves of China-based telecom operators to shift their promotional subsidies from 3G to 4G smartphones, according to industry sources.
China-based handset vendors have successfully diverted their previous focus of selling 3G smartphones in the domestic market to overseas markets, offsetting the adverse impact of the cancellation of subsidies by telecom operators, the sources said.
Additionally, handset vendors have also chosen to keep chipset inventories at high levels at present due to tight production schedules at wafer foundry houses, added the sources.
Since other chipset solution vendors have paid more attention to promote 4G solutions, MediaTek currently serves as the sole major supplier of 3G solutions in China, and therefore will continue to ramp up its 3G solution shipments in 2014, commented the sources.
