Total shipments of Amazon's Fire phones are expected to reach 2-3 million units by year-end 2014, which is unlikely to make a significant impact on the global smartphone market, according to sources in Taiwan's handset supply chain.
Amazon is outsourcing production of the Fire phones to the Foxconn Group, with initial shipments totaling 300,000-500,000 units a month, the sources revealed.
The Fire phone is unlikely to replicate the success Amazon made with its Kindle Fire tablets as initial sales of the Fire phones are limited in the US market, while pricing is not so aggressive, the sources commented.
The Fire phone sports a Qualcomm 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU, 4.7-inch IPS 1280 by 720 display, 2GB RAM, 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with F2.0 lens, and with built-in Dolby Digital Plus audio technology.
The 64GB version is available for US$749 unlocked and 32GB version US$649. Prices go down to US$299 and US$199, respectively, with AT&T bundled sales.
