In view of fast growing SSD demand, IC design house Phison Electronics will start producing its 28nm SSD controller chips at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) by the end of 2014, according to industry sources.
Marvell Technology, currently one of the major suppliers of SSD controller ICs, has already used TSMC's 28nm process to manufacture its SSD controller parts, the sources noted.
Marvell is expected to see its share in the global SSD controller market expand significantly in 2014 after rival LSI sold its SSD controller business unit to Seagate, and Fusion io was acquired by SanDisk, remarked the sources.
In addition to Phison, other Taiwan-based SSD controller chip vendors including Silicon Motion Technology and JMicron Technology are also expected to increase efforts to develop related controller chips for the growing SSD market, added the sources.
Marvel reportedly is eyeing SSD controller chip orders from Kingston Technology, which has ramped up its SSD shipments to 500,000 units a month, said the sources.
The global SSD market totaled US$10.9 billion in 2013, with Samsung Electronics accounting for a 28.5% share, followed by Intel at 13.1%, SanDisk 11.7%, Micron Technology 6.9% and Toshiba 5.6%, according to Gartner.
Meanwhile, IHS iSuppli estimates global sales of SSD products to reach US$11.29 billion in 2014, up from US$8.82 billion in 2013. |
