Microsoft made headlines this morning because of a memo revealing that the company would fire 18,000 people. The majority of those layoffs are targeted at Nokia, the company purchased by Microsoft just a few months ago. In addition to getting rid of thousands of Nokia employees, Microsoft will also stop coming out with any Nokia Android phones.
Nokia had begun manufacturing Android devices before the acquisition, but as one would expect, Microsoft doesn't want that to continue. Microsoft has confirmed it will even transfer some Nokia X phones away from Android and to Windows Phone.
Current Android-based Nokia phones will still be supported, according to Stephen Elop, but future ones probably won't be released.
This effectively means Android phones from Microsoft/Nokia will no longer be a thing. |
