Taiwan-based eMMC controller suppliers are expected to land more windfall orders or cooperation projects from leading eMMC players, including Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology, SK hynix and SanDisk, according to industry sources.
Samsung is likely to release more orders for eMMC controller chips to Taiwan-based IC suppliers as the Korea-based vendor has shifted its focus to ramping up its SSD shipments, the sources said.
Taiwan-based IC design houses Silicon Motion Technology and Skymedi are being said to have potential to land eMMC controller orders from Samsung, said the sources.
Micron is currently purchasing eMMC controller chips mainly from Taiwan-based Phison Electronics. But the sources indicated that Micron plans to either diversify its supply sources or set up its own eMMC-controller design team through acquisition.
Meanwhile, SanDisk has begun releasing, for the first time, its eMMC controller chip orders to Taiwan-based IC design houses recently. SanDisk's orders are bound to increase in the second half of 2014 along with its rising eMMC shipments, said the sources. |
