Motorola Mobility has continued to ramp up its smartphone shipments and could help Lenovo further expand its sales in the global market when the two firms are officially merged, according to industry sources.

Motorola managed to ramp up its smartphone shipments to 8-9 million units in the second quarter of 2014, up from 6.5 million shipped in the previous quarter. The shipments accounted for 3% of global smartphone sales in the quarter, according to Canalys.

Lenovo and Motorola together shipped 24.1 million handsets worldwide in the second quarter of 2014, taking the third position in the global vendor rankings with an 8% share, the sources noted.

Motorola's strategy of focusing its markets in the US, UK, Latin America and India, as well as on models with high price/performance ratios such as the Moto G and Moto E has been successful, according to market sources.

Motorola has also been promoting sales through the Internet, resulting in strong sales in the US, Brazil, Mexico and India, said the sources, adding that the vendor has managed to sell nearly one million smartphones a quarter online in India through cooperation with e-commerce website, the Flipkart.
