Asus may actually have its own laptop that can compete against and kill the Chromebook, at least for some consumers. The company has announced a Windows 8.1 with Bing laptop that costs just $199, placing it below most Chromebooks while providing a device that is capable of more than a Chromebook.

The Asus EeeBook X205 comes with an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 display, 2GB of RAM, and a Bay Trail processor from Intel. One issue with those low internal specs is that Windows requires more power than Chrome OS to run smoothly, so people won't be able to do anything intensive with the EeeBook X205.
Asus is able to offer the laptop for just $199 because Microsoft is providing Windows 8.1 with Bing for free or at a very lost cost. This allows Asus and other manufacturers to focus on providing good hardware for a certain price, rather than having to include expensive licensing fees in the calculations.
Microsoft will provide EeeBook users with 100GB of OneDrive storage for two years, matching Google's offer of 100GB of cloud storage with its Chromebooks. |
