Android has already taken over the global smartphone market, and it has done the same in the tablet market. New stats from IDC show that the worldwide tablet market grew by 11.5 percent in the last few months, and iOS' market share has dropped from 29.2 percent to just 22.8 percent.

IDC says essentially every other percentage point belongs to Android, and even single manufacturers like Samsung are coming close to matching iOS' market share. Samsung's current tablet market share is 18.3 percent.

Apple just introduced a couple new tablets, but it will never be able to regain a dominate position since there are dozens of companies making Android tablets and just one company making iOS tablets.

Despite a drop in market share, Apple remains one of the most profitable tablet makers since it charges a premium for its devices.
