China handset vendors including Oppo and Gionee are expanding their cooperation with Samsung Display and are currently increasing orders for AMOLED panels for units to be released in 2015.
Samsung has been reportedly slashing prices for its AMOLED handset displays as it has seen lower-than-expected results for the technology, prompting AMOLED panel orders from China vendors for upcoming smartphones.
AMOLED panel makers face challenges from LTPS TFT LCD and a-Si technology as costs for the two technologies have dropped over the years and as makers in Taiwan and China have increased yields.
Panels will be used in units aimed for release both in China and other emerging markets, and is quickly gaining consideration for use in the tablet segment outside of high-end applications.
Meanwhile, in terms of TVs, CNET recently reported that Kim Hyun-seok, head of Samsung Electronics' TV business, said the company has no plans to release no new OLED TVs in the near future, and will instead shift focus to quantum dot LCD models.
Digitimes Research added that OLED TV pricing is expected to remain double that of Ultra HD TVs through 2016, which will influence the 120% on-year expected growth in Ultra HD TV shipments in 2015. |
