Despite many research firms having estimated that global tablet and smartphone shipment growths will dramatically weaken in 2015 and Apple, Samsung Electronics and Asustek Computer are unlikely to be able to achieve shipment performances similar to those in the past few years, Asustek is still confident about its 2015 performance and expects to ship 16 million smartphones and 12 million tablets, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Currently, Samsung is seeing its smartphone sales significantly impacted by Apple's iPhone 6-series products and China's low-price smartphones, causing its shipments and profits to both declined during the past six months.

Meanwhile, Apple, which has an about 30% share in the global tablet market, is also seeing its iPad sales drop each quarter.

Asustek's confidence mainly comes from its rising mobile device sales in Taiwan, Japan, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Russia, although the vendor did not achieve the sales volumes it expected in China and the US. For 2015, Asustek is planning to expand its presence in Europe, the US and China, looking to double its shipments in the year, the sources noted.

With reduced marketing expenses and rising economies of scale to help cut component costs, Asustek expects its mobile device businesses to contribute good profits in 2015.

Asustek's tablets with phone functions are also seeing better-than-expected demand in Southeast Asia, in particular India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia are expected to be one of the major revenue contributors for Asustek in 2015, the sources said.

However, some smartphone players believe Asustek is likely to face strong challenges trying to expand in China's smartphone market since its products are currently unable to compete against vendors such as Xiaomi, Lenovo and Huawei in terms or pricing, while its weak relationships with China's telecom carriers are also a barrier to growth.
