Sharp announced a new 80-inch 4K TV that leaves standard 4K TVs in the dust. The Sharp AQUOS Beyond 4K UHD TV (wow, that's quite a mouthful) has an 80-inch panel, but that's not its special feature. It comes with 66 million subpixels, surpassing the 42 million in other 4K panels out in the market. This is achieved by cutting each pixel in half, vertically, and letting those subpixels use their own color values. What you finally get is 167% higher resolution, or an effective picture that is almost 8K in resolution.
For its pixel-splitting magic, Sharp is making use of 'Quattron' technology. Sharp also claims that the AQUOS Beyond 4K UHD TV displays more colors than any other TV, while having significantly higher contrast too. Their new TV will run on Google's Android TV platform. The 80-inch UH-30 TV costs $6,000. |
