MediaTek announced a new SoC that is tailored for Google's Android Wear platform. The MediaTek MT2601 SoC features a 1.2 GHz dual-core Cortex A7s, ARM's Mali-400MP GPU and support for resolutions up to qHD (960 x 540). MediaTek says that the chip has an extremely small footprint, and is "highly optimized for cost and power performance," which makes it ideal for wearables based on the Android Wear platform.
The MT2601 is coupled with the MT6630 SoC to interface with numerous sensors and to provide wireless connectivity. Hopefully, the next wave of Android Wear wearables that are based off MediaTek's new chip, already in mass production, offers better battery life. Also, MediaTek says that using the MT2601 SoC would result in lower BoM for OEMs. |
