MediaTek saw its sales climb to a record high of NT$213.06 billion (US$6.68 billion) in 2014, buoyed by strong demand for smartphone chips.
MediaTek has announced consolidated revenues of NT$17.08 billion for December 2014, up 30.5% on year. Consolidated sales for the fourth quarter amounted to NT$55.45 billion, down 3.5% sequentially but meeting the company's guidance of NT$54-58.6 billion.
Shipments of 4G LTE chips led to a particularly strong fourth quarter for MediaTek, a Chinese-language Commercial Times report quoted market watchers as saying. In 2014, MediaTek shipped more than 350 million smartphone chips, of which more than 30 million units were for 4G models, the report noted.
Nevertheless, due to price competition, MediaTek's gross margin will come under downward pressure in 2015, the report said.
MediaTek president Hsieh Ching-chiang said previously that the company would ship more than 30 million 4G smartphone chips in 2014, and shipments of 4G chips would account for about 20% of the company's overall handset-IC shipments for the year. |
