Most flagship Smartphones from top OEMs are still powered by quad-core processors. Octa-core processors are yet to catch on, except in China, where Smartphones with octa-core processors have sprung up by the hundreds. This is largely thanks to MediaTek's affordable octa-core chips.

Thought an 8-core processor is too much for a mobile device? The latest reports suggest that MediaTek is working on 10- and 12-core mobile processors. And we might see such processors in 2015 itself.

Even in today's age, most mobile (and even desktop) apps don't make use of more than 4-cores. Which is the reason why Qualcomm focuses on producing more powerful cores, rather than chips with more cores. MediaTek, however, has an entirely different strategy in mind.
