Microsoft's budget Windows Phone 8.1 handset, the Lumia 535, has rapidly shot up through popularity ranks. Launched in India on November 27th last year, data from Zauba reveals that Microsoft has already shipped over 500,000 Lumia 535 handsets in India.

The Lumia 535 could easily become the most popular Windows Phone handset within a few short months. Priced at Rs. 8,500 ($145), the Lumia 535 is both inexpensive, while delivering on features and specs. AdDuplex reports that the Lumia 535 has taken up 4% of the Windows Phone pie.

The success of Microsoft's budget handset outside of India remains to be seen.
