Acer's smartphone business has not yet turned profitable, but it will continue to adopt a stable business model to look for business opportunities in the market, according to company CEO Jason Chen.

Acer is planning to launch Windows-based smartphones and will showcase the products at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015, pairing with its Build Your Own Cloud (BYOC) platform, said Chen during the company's supply chain conference on January 22.

Chen pointed out at Acer's suppliers including Quanta computer, Compal Electronics, Wistron and Pegatron Technology have all participated in the conference.

He revealed that the company has recently been approached by a high-end smartphone vendor for a takever of Acer's handset business. Although Acer does not rule out the possibility of a merger for its handset business, it will continue to operate the business as usual in the meantime.

For the future, Acer will continue pushing its smartphone products into more countries and will mainly focus on the entry-level segment. The company currently does not have a plan to launch high-end smartphones, Chen said.

Chen is also optimistic about the Chromebook business as the device's share in overall notebook shipments already rose from around 10% in 2013 to over 30% currently and will continue to grow in the future.
