Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge at Mobile World Congress 2015, putting an end to all those unofficial leaks and countless teasers surrounding the two Galaxy S6 handsets. Both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge succeed last year's flagship, the Galaxy S5. While the Galaxy S6 is a direct descendant of the Galaxy S5, the Galaxy S6 Edge is more inspired by the experimental Galaxy Note Edge.
All eyes are on the Galaxy S6, which is being hailed as Samsung's comeback flagship. If it does make a dent in the market, Samsung could regain the market share that it lost over the course of last year.
Samsung Galaxy S6
To start with, the Samsung Galaxy S6 has a metal body and dual-glass design, just like on the Galaxy Note 4. This is Samsung's first flagship Smartphone (Note series are termed phablets) to sport a metal frame. If the Galaxy Note 4's build quality is anything to go by, this is perhaps the best design change that the Galaxy S series has gotten since its launch.
Coming to the Galaxy S6 specifications, we have a 5.1-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1440) Super AMOLED display, protected by Gorilla Glass 4. That's 577 ppi pixel density, folks. The home button has a fingerprint sensor embedded in it, and the Galaxy S6 supports mobile payments with the help of NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission).
The chip running the show is Samsung's new Exynos 7420, an octa-core processor with 64-bit ARM Cortex A57 cores clocked at 2.1GHz, and another four ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz. This has been paired with 3GB of cutting-edge LPDDR4 RAM, and the powerful Mali-T760 GPU.
Note that the Exynos 7420 is built on the new 14nm manufacturing process, putting Samsung in another league altogether. Qualcomm's latest and greatest, Snapdragon 810, utilizes the 20nm node.
The rumors about a 20MP rear camera have been debunked. The Galaxy S6 has a 16MP ISOCELL rear camera, which is made better by OIS, and phase detection autofocus. There's 4K video recording support, and the rear camera has a single-LED flash only. Meanwhile, the front camera is a 5MP sensor with support for 1080p video capture.
Samsung is also making use of screaming-fast UFS 2.0 memory, which uses "Command Queue" technology from SSDs to offer 2.7x times the speed of the previous benchmark setter, eMMC 5.0 memory.
Connectivity options include WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1, IR Blaster, and LTE Cat. 6 support. The Samsung Galaxy S6 comes in three flavors - 32GB/64GB/128GB internal storage. Also, the Galaxy S6 comes with a 2,550 mAh battery.
Lastly, there's the refreshed and debloated TouchWiz UI, which is based on Material Design guidelines. The new TouchWiz UI is said to be lighter, better (64-bit) optimized, and sport a cleaner interface. The Galaxy S6 runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the-box.
The Galaxy S6 will be available in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, and Blue Topaz. It will launch in 20 markets across the world on April 10th, and additional markets in May. Official pricing is yet to be revealed. |
