Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S6, along with the Galaxy S6 Edge. Since then, the internet has been talking non-stop about the new flagship from Samsung. The troubled Korean company has been losing Smartphone market share consistently for the past year. Will the Galaxy S6 be the Knight in shining armor to the damsel (Samsung) in distress?
1. Galaxy S6 has a metal body
Who doesn't love a Smartphone with a metal body? And the Samsung Galaxy S6 delivers on that front. The Galaxy S6 has a metal frame, and dual-glass covers on either side of the device. If the Galaxy Note 4 felt premium to you when you first picked it up, the Galaxy S6 is going to feel even better.
In fact, the one complaint that we all had about the Galaxy series was its cheap, plastic build quality.
2. Galaxy S6 with cutting-edge Exynos chipset
Samsung ditched Qualcomm and went full-steam ahead with its own Exynos chipset with the Galaxy S6. There is only one variant of the Galaxy S6 - Exynos 7420 chipset. This chip is very interesting.
The chip running the show is Samsung's new Exynos 7420, an octa-core processor with 64-bit ARM Cortex A57 cores clocked at 2.1GHz, and another four ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz.
Not only is it an octa-core 64-bit processor with LTE Cat. 6 support, but it is the first mobile SoC in the market to be manufactured using the latest 14nm process. That results in some sweet power savings.
3. Screaming-fast UFS 2.0 internal storage
With the Galaxy S6, Samsung ditched a microSD card slot. But wait, isn't that what many other OEMs have done in the past? Right. But Samsung has done it differently. They really want you to not feel bad about losing the microSD card slot.
Therefore, Samsung has implemented UFS 2.0, which uses "Command Queue" technology from SSDs to offer 2.7x times the speed of eMMC 5.0 memory standard. SSD speeds on a Smartphone? Yes, please!
Additionally, the Galaxy S6 will be available in three variants - 32GB/64GB/128GB internal storage. 64GB version looks yummmm to me.
4. Quad HD Super AMOLED display
If there's one thing that's gotten consistently better over the years, it's Super AMOLED displays. AMOLED panels have come a long way from the oversaturated, "fake" color show, to a more accurate representation. Not only that, AMOLED panels continue to benefit from being thinner, and consuming lesser power (unless you set a white background as your wallpaper...don't).
The 5.1-inch display of the Galaxy S6 has Quad HD resolution - 2560 x 1440 pixels - which bestow a stunning 577 ppi pixel density. You won't be able to distinguish between individual pixels, so don't even try.
5. Debloated TouchWiz UI
We almost never like it when a product loses some features, but it's the opposite case with TouchWiz. Samsung has debloated TouchWiz, removing a lot of unnecessary junk that bogs down the system and makes the phone unbearably slow.
TouchWiz is now based on Material Design, as the Galaxy S6 is running Android 5.0 Lollipop. So, not only do you get a clean up, you get a new design language as well.
And lastly, TouchWiz is 64-bit optimized, which means that it will take full advantage of the 64-bit processor that is under the hood. Hopefully, that translates to fewer lags and more responsiveness.
6. Super-fast LPDDR4 RAM
With the Galaxy S6, Samsung has left no stone unturned. Even the RAM used in this device is special. Samsung is making use of super-fast LPDDR4 RAM, and while we would have liked to see 4GB of memory, 3GB is still perfect for today's Smartphones.
The only other Smartphone that also uses LPDDR4 RAM is the LG G Flex 2.
7. ISOCELL camera with OIS
The Galaxy S6 has a 16MP ISOCELL camera, just like on the Galaxy S5. However, Samsung has equipped their latest flagship with a few extra features. For starters, the Galaxy S6 camera comes with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).
Additionally, the upgraded 16MP camera on the Galaxy S6 has an f1.9 aperture size, which should result in better low-light performance.
The Galaxy S6 comes with a 5MP front-facing camera, which also has f1.9 aperture size.
8. Corning Gorilla Glass 4
Do you have butter fingers? Worry not, for the Galaxy S6 comes with Corning Gorilla Glass. Corning's latest screen protection layer is its most sturdy product yet. Don't expect it to be easy to put a scratch on the Galaxy S6 display.
Worried about the rear side of the Galaxy S6 catching scratches? Samsung took care of that too, by fitting the rear side with a Gorilla Glass 4 panel. This was possible since the Galaxy S6 has a non-removable battery design.
9. Wireless Charging
Samsung is pushing wireless charging with the Galaxy S6. Their new flagship Smartphone supports WPC and PMA standards. Samsung clearly expects a large portion of the Galaxy S6 buyers to make use of wireless charging on a daily basis.
Seeing that the Galaxy S6 comes with a 2,550 mAh battery (one of our few gripes with the device), regular charging could become a necessity for the handset. But if you got a wireless charging kit lying around, it shouldn't be much of a hassle. You only have to drop the device on the wireless charging pad, and forget all about the wires. |
