Samsung and Apple are fierce competitors in the smartphone market and at least for one quarter, Q4 2014, Apple actually came out on top in terms of total phone sales. The latest data from Gartner reveals more iPhone units were sold around the world than Samsung phones.

During the fourth quarter--which was also one of the best quarters in history for Apple--74.83 million iPhones were sold. That's a little bit more than the 73.03 million smartphones Samsung was able to sell during the same time period.

Samsung did have more total annual sales.
