Qualcomm, which is believed to have lost processor orders for the Galaxy S6 series smartphones from Samsung Electronics, is vying for orders for the upcoming Galaxy Note 5, according to industry sources.
The recently-introduced Galaxy S6 flagship smartphones are powered by Samsung-designed Exynos processors, and did not come with two versions as what the previous-generation Galaxy S4 has, the sources said.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 overheating issues are being identified as the main reason prompting Samsung to dump the processor for use in the Galaxy S6, in favor of its own chips, previous reports quoted industry rumors as saying. The reports also cited some industry sources as suggesting that the Galaxy S6 would ultimately have two versions with one using Samsung's Exynos processors and the other featuring Qualcomm's chips, like Samsung did with its Galaxy S4.
However, Samsung is believed to have only utilized its Exynos chips in the Galaxy S6 series, though Qualcomm has fixed overheating issues with its Snapdragon 810, the sources found. The Samsung-designed Exynos chips for the Galaxy S6 will be built using Samsung's 14nm FinFET process technology.
TSMC, which is reportedly contracted to manufacture Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 processors using its 20nm process, will see the overall 20nm chip orders reduced due to Qualcomm's loss of orders for the Galaxy S6, the sources noted.
Nevertheless, Qualcomm is striving to win processor orders for Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 slated for release in the second half of 2015, the sources indicated. TSMC could stand a chance of obtaining orders from Qualcomm for chips used in the upcoming large-screen device, the sources said. |
