MediaTek has unveiled a new mobile processor family targeted at high-end smartphones. Dubbed Helio, the new system-on-chips (SoC) combine both high performance and low power consumption.

"Helio is MediaTek's premium mobile processor family which integrates leading heterogeneous computing technology with advanced multimedia innovations," the company said.

The first offering of MediaTek's Helio family will be the X10 series, a 64-bit SoC based on eight Cortex-A53 cores and clocked at 2.2GHz, the company revealed. The 64-bit octa-core SoC can support display refresh rates of 120Hz, and slow motion videos at 480fps.

MediaTek will also launch a Helio P-series, which the company describes "a range of premium performance chips," later in 2015. It did not disclose spec details about the upcoming chipset line.

MediaTek expects the first Helio-powered smartphones to be commercially available in the second quarter of 2015.
