The Los Angeles Unified School District revealed its billion-dollar computer plan in 2013 which included the purchase of thousands of iPads. That plan has since been scrapped but the district did spend $30 million on iPads. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will now investigate the district's use of funds.

Ballot materials from 2008 were used to justify the expense. However, those materials only applied to technology generally and iPads didn't exist at the time. Voters did not know expensive tablets would be purchased or that students would get to take them home after school.

The SEC will determine if it was appropriate for millions to be spent on iPads.
