Nanya Technology has delivered mobile RAM chips to clients for verification with volume production slated for the first quarter of 2011. While fellow company Winbond Electronics is currently enjoying strong sales of mobile RAM parts, ProMOS Technology will also venture into the production of similar chips soon.
Due to the launches of servers with high density DRAM, iPhone and iPad devices and demand from the smartphone sector, the global market for mobile RAM chips is expected to top two billion units in 1Gb equivalent, an increase of 100% from 2009, according to industry sources, who also predicted global mobile RAM to grow another 30% in 2011.
Nanya is currently rolling out 256Mb and 512Mb mobile RAM chips using a 50nm process. Sales of mobile RAM chips are expected to account for 10% of total revenues in 2011, according to an internal estimate by Nanya.
